When We Deceive by Catherine Yaffe

Although the third in a series and felt right at home in the pages of this story and while I don’t doubt that it pays off to read the other two books first, I certainly didn’t feel out of sorts by starting with this one.

DI Thornes ‘Ziggy’ to his friends, and pretty much everyone else, is a great character and was a joy to follow and get to know in this book. The rest of the team were fab too and I enjoyed their interactions.

In this book, Ziggy can’t be on the one case that he can’t stop thinking about and would give anything to be pursuing. His best friend has been murdered and there’s no way he can keep away from the investigation.

This character driven story made for a fast read and developed some memorable characters – poor Lolly for one – alongside a clever and intriguing storyline. This was my first time reading one of Yaffe’s books and I suspect it won’t be the last.
