Dark Fiction by Jon Richter

Where, oh where does one even begin with a review for Dark Fiction? Is it an anthology, or a  collection of gruesome, creepy, disturbing and sinister short-stories? Or, maybe, it is an ‘experiential horror collection’… the concept of which gets worse the further in you read!

Although all are dark and disturbing, they also cross an eclectic range of genres meaning there surely must be something for everyone. They are also differing lengths and standalone meaning this is the perfect book for either a scarefest binge or for dipping in and out of whenever you feel like a dive into the bleak unknown.

Being a fan of Richter’s previous books, I knew I was in for a ‘treat’ but didn’t expect there to be such a mix that took me on a journey from sci-fi to gore and horror – albeit with a brush of intelligent humour on the side.

I figure that for all authors there must be a thought process of ‘oh god I simply can’t include that it is too scary, too sexy, too disgusting, too depraved‘ etc you get the idea. Which makes me wonder what DOESN’T get through Richter’s filter?!

Although each story was deeply engaging in a variety of delightful (mostly not delightful and a bit horrid) ways, I would say my favourites were:

Skin – super short but oh god so nasty!

Brute – loved this one, I had a soft spot for Bogrot and greatly enjoyed his development.

Endurance – a brilliant expose of the human condition, greed, arrogance and superiority crash headlong into abject terror.

Slice – ah just a little tale about pizza…

I love the cover, and also the hideous artwork by David T Wilby throughout, don’t get me wrong ‘hideous’ is meant as a compliment! My thanks to Zooloos Book Tours and Jon Richter for letting me be a part of this blog tour.

Blurb: Jon Richter returns to horror with a new collection of short, chilling tales, splicing together his best previously published works with a batch of nerve-shredding new fiction. Encompassing science fiction and fantasy as well as gothic horror and outright weirdness, the anthology is brought twitching and wriggling to life by the brilliant illustrations of David T Wilby.

Dark Fiction will slake the thirst of anyone who craves original, fiendishly crafted stories with twist endings that cling to you long after you’ve finished reading…
