You just can’t beat a Clare Mackintosh book and the Ffion Morgan series is no exception, starting with The Last Party, and getting better with every book, Ffion is getting into her stride now as a confident no nonsense copper who gets the job done.
This multilayered storyline was truly innovative, with some very creative murders and crime scenes and many a love triangle.
Clare Mackintosh also pokes gentle fun at those who aspire to keep up with the Jones’s as DS Leo Brady’s ex does her best to convince the world that she is as good as those who live on The Hill. I actually felt really quite sorry for her at times, even though she presents as a bit of a spiteful and unpleasant woman it was apparent that this was borne from a lack of self worth. Touches like this are the icing on the cake of a clever crime thriller and help Clare’s books to rise to the top of the pile.
Another great read from this solid author and I look forward to many more.
My thanks to the author, NetGalley and Little, Brown Brook Group for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Blurb: Even on the most desirable street, there’s a dark side . . .
The Hill is the kind of place everyone wants to live: luxurious, exclusive and safe. But now someone is breaking and entering these Cheshire homes one by one, and DS Leo Brady suspects the burglar is looking for something, or someone, in particular.
Over the border in Wales, DC Ffion Morgan recovers the body of an estate agent from the lake. There’s no love lost between Ffion and estate agents, but who hated this one enough to want her dead – and why?
As their cases collide, Ffion and Leo discover people will pay a high price to keep their secrets behind closed doors . . .
