Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

4 Stars from me

A sweet and gently thought provoking read that I loved from start to finish. Kazuo Ishiguro does not ram things down your throat, but rather shows you a glimpse and the beginnings of a suggestion leaving you free to form your own thoughts and opinions.

Klara is a standout delight, there are other good characters in the book but Klara is the star of the show and her sweetness and intelligence make for a potent mix – making her perfect for her role as an AF.

This is my first book by this author, and this was a book chosen as a book club read – on the recommendation of the person who nominated it I will be going on to read Remains of the Day.

Overall, this is an easy going read with intriguing questions raised about the future of AI and the future of mankind, but all done in a non-intrusive way. Delightful.

Blurb: From her place in the store, Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.

In Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro looks at our rapidly changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?
