This is a difficult book for me to review. Any regular readers will be aware that I am – at heart – a crime thriller/murder mystery fan.
However, I read Us Three as part of my book group and I am eternally grateful to the other members of the group for dragging me out of my murderous rut every now and then!
I say it is hard because some of the things I didn’t love might be quite the norm for this style of book. For example, I found there to be some quite glaring and handy coincidences. If they hadn’t have happened then huge chunks of the story wouldn’t have happened either. But as I say, I don’t know that is ‘the norm’ for this style.
Anyway, moving on from that, Ruth Jones is a talented writer who created a world around the three friends that was a delight to read exist in while I followed their lives.
All three women were flawed (Lana and Judith more so) in different ways but they were fun to follow and I enjoyed Patricia’s role and her storyline would be priceless if this were ever televised.
The ending was a little bit nothingy for me but again I get the impression that is the norm.
Overall, this was an engrossing read and I very much had to keep reading to see how life turned out for the group of friends. I was definitely invested in their lives and am sure that any usual fans of this genre would love this book.
Blurb: The new novel from Ruth Jones, author of the smash-hit, number one bestselling debut, Never Greener.
Meet Lana, Judith and Catrin. Best friends since primary school when they swore an oath on a Curly Wurly wrapper that they would always be there for each other, come what may.
After the trip of a lifetime, the three girls are closer than ever. But an unexpected turn of events shakes the foundation of their friendship to its core, leaving their future in doubt – there’s simply too much to forgive, let alone forget. An innocent childhood promise they once made now seems impossible to keep…
Packed with all the heart and empathy that made Ruth’s name as a screenwriter and now author, Us Three is a funny, moving and uplifting novel about life’s complications, the power of friendship and how it defines us all. Prepare to meet characters you’ll feel you’ve known all your life – prepare to meet Us Three.
