I’ve never met a Lisa Hall book that I didn’t love and this one is no different!
In the Dream Family we meet influencer Heather, her husband Josh and daughter Cora. Heather’s social media work pays the bills even though Josh is often dismissive of it, and as it grew unexpectedly for Heather it feels like a gift horse that she can’t afford to look in the mouth. I think the descriptions of how obsessed she is and how it often comes first in her life are pretty much bang on – in the same way that most self-employed people have to prioritise the business that keeps a roof over the family’s head.
As is the way with psychological thrillers, there are so many times that the characters do something that just makes you shake your head in bewilderment and Heather has her fair share of questionable decisions as she strives to fit in to their new community.
Surely all high profile influencers must have their quota of trolls and Heather certainly had hers. At first I found it odd that she would devote so much time and emotion into the troll but then of course it becomes clear that Heather has a few skeletons in her closet and a past that she would rather stayed behind her.
There are a whole host of new chums all with different motivations and secrets of their own – while reading I couldn’t help but picture them as the cast from Motherland which made it all the more enjoyable for me.
This is a fast and enjoyable psychological thriller that scratches every itch!
My thanks the author and Zooloos Book Tours for an ARC in return for an honest review on the Book Tour for The Dream Family.
Blurb: We’re the dream family. Just ask my hundred thousand followers. A dream cottage in the town I grew up in. A fresh start for ten-year-old Cora. The mums at the school gate welcome me straight away. Coffee after drop-off. Drinks at the pub.
Then a message appears from a number I don’t know. B***H.
Just wait until your new friends find out what you’re really like.
Someone gets into my house. Someone posts things only I should have seen. Someone is tearing my perfect family apart, one post at a time.
I’ve never told anyone what I did here, all those years ago.
Now my little girl is gone. And the latest message asks: How does it feel to lose the one you love the most?
