So I’ve said 4 stars but I had a little bit of an epiphany after reading this book so maybe it should really be 1 million stars? Because, weirdly, so did my whole book group.
Anyway, the story, it’s a classic mid-point between life and death type scenario, only in this one the main character, Nora, finds herself in a library with each book representing an alternate life that she could have taken.
While in the library, Nora gets to explore alternate lives to see if they would have made her happier than the one she ultimately lived. There’s also the super scary ‘book of regrets’ and this is what helps her pin down which lives to explore as that appears to be the only way to solve the regrets.
As you would expect, there are elements of jeopardy and some lives look like they’d be great but turn out to have flaws. All in all it’s a nice book, a bit twee in places for my taste, BUT THEN THERE’S THE WHOLE EPIPHANY THING.
Somewhere along the line something must’ve got through as I’ve been thinking lately that life is all a bit pointless, I mean it is isn’t it, we just aren’t meant to focus on that. And that pointless can lead one to a rather bleak point of view. However, it can also be deeply freeing and liberating – because if it is all pointless then nothing matters, but in a good way. So you that next cup of tea you have, it is actually the only one you’ll ever have (the past doesn’t exist, the future hasn’t happened yet and therefore also doesn’t exist, meaning the only thing you know is real is right now), and therefore it is the best one you’ll ever have.
Not making sense? Read the book!
