The Dying Light by Ann Cleeves

4 Stars from me

As one would expect from this author, this was a solid and engaging read with a strong storyline.

I have enjoyed Venn’s previous story and while he isn’t even coming close to stealing Vera’s place in my heart, it’s fair to say that I’m warming to him!

The story of the dead girl and her missing friend was intriguing and immediately pulled me in, it felt like there were just the right amount of potential baddies to choose from too and I liked being able to work through them all along with Venn. Now I am normally adept at very quickly finding the killer in these types of stories but the author got me with this one…

The Dying Light has a sublime setting, deep and believable characters, a flawed yet determined detective and a bittersweet storyline. Being the queen of the crime thriller, it is no surprise that the author weaves so much more than just a ‘whodunnit’ into the pages of this book.

Greatly enjoyed and recommended to all fans of the genre. My thanks to the author, netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Blurb: The deadliest truths are those in the shadows . . .

Detective Matthew Venn is called in to investigate a puzzling death. The body of a young woman has been found in the swimming pool of Tide House, a luxurious holiday home in North Devon, and her best friend is missing. The property belongs to rising political star Paul Armstrong and the case quickly draws intense media scrutiny.

As a scorching heat wave rages and further tragedy strikes, Venn and his team begin questioning a community brimming with secrets. The dead woman and her friend had been spotted at a nearby music festival the day before, an event which brought locals and outsiders together – some of whom may have been more connected with the Armstrongs than first thought.

Caught between a powerful family’s secrets and a powder keg of local tensions, Venn must navigate a treacherous path. Knowing that the real answers lie not in what people say, but in the silence that they keep . . .
